Bouldering with Kling Mountain Guides
Come bouldering with Kling Mountain Guides, Durango’s only family oriented and locally owned mountain guide service! What is bouldering you ask? Good question!
"Bouldering is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope and normally limited to very short climbs over a crash pad so that a fall will not result in serious injury. It is typically practiced on large natural boulders or artificial boulders in gyms and outdoor urban areas. However, it may also be practiced at the base of larger rock faces, or even on buildings or public architecture (see boulldering." -Wikipedia.com)
Let the guides of KMG take you to the famous Sailing Hawks and Dalla Mountain Park in Durango, Colorado. This area is renowned for it's hundreds of boulder problems. The rock is Dakota Sandstone and easy on the hands. The individual problems range from 5 feet to 20 feet tall Our guides are intimate with the area and know all the great problems. Expect to spend the day protected from the hot sun by tall pine trees. You will travel from boulder to boulder working on numerous problems throughout the day.
Typically in North America rock climbing is rated on the Yosemite Decimal System or YDS. This is the system most climbers are familiar with. The YDS starts at 5.0 and goes all the way to 5.15. Routes are rated by the most difficult portion, or the crux move. The sport of bouldering however uses the Hueco Tanks or V-Scale to rate problems. At the current time, this scale goes from V0 to V16. Here is a chart to help with the conversion from the YDS to the V-Scale.
| V-Scale | Yosemite Decimal System |
|---|---|
| V0- | 5..8/5.9 |
| V0 | 5.10-/5.10 |
| V0+ | 5.10 |
| V1 | 5.10+ |
| V2 | 5.10+/5.11- |
| V3 | 5.11 |
| V4 | 5.11+ |
| V5 | 5.12- |
| V6 | 5.12 |
| V7 | 5.12+ |
| V8 | 5.13- |
| V9 | 5.13 |
| V10 | 5.13+/5.14- |
| V11 | 5.14- |
| V12 | 5.14 |
| V13 | 5.15 |
